Locals consider Lenno to be a boring, perhaps sleepy, town. However, Lenno can add a couple of gems to your trip to Italy or lake Como. Adding to that, it’s a perfect town to spend your day. Here’s why:
1. Villa del Balbianello
Lenno hosts the popular Villa del Balbianello that is famous for its history and from movies such as Star Wars and Casino Royale. The hilly walk to the entrance leads you to think you’ve stepped back in time on your way to a spectacular villa. Balbianello has a beautiful terraced garden to roam around and enjoy the great view it offers. Moreover, it also exhibits details of the extraordinary lifestyles lived by previous owners. You can read about Villa del Balbianello in this post.
2. A boulevard walk
Balbianello lies next to the boulevard of Lenno where you can enjoy a stroll or a coffee in one of the cafés and restaurants. The shades provided by the trees will cool you off. It is a perfect place for lunch, no matter if you bring it yourself or order at the local restaurants.
3. Gelato from La Fabbrica del Gelato
Even though La Fabbrica del Gelato is located on the boulevard, it deserves a special notice. If you love ice-cream, you really need to stop here and taste their flavors. Eating their ice-cream feels like an angel touched your tongue. The apple-cinnamon tastes like grandma’s pie on a cone. The nut-flavors are heavenly too, especially pistache and almond! The people working here are very passionate about what they do and make everything themselves. Grab an ice-cream, support a local store and enjoy the boulevard, a perfect combination if you ask me.
4. Chiesa di Santo Stefano e Battistero
A charming and old church that is not far from the the lake and boulevard. Its romantic square makes it worth to look around. It’s not a glorious church, but as Lenno is pretty small it’s worth a short visit. You can easily walk with your gelato to the square and look around the center of Lenno.
5. Hand-made olive-oil: taste the pressing
There is a special technique that has survived many family generations that is still used to this day to prepare olive-oil. If you love to cook and if you’re busy supporting local businesses anyway after that gelato, you really need to taste the olive-oil in Lenno. A great souvenir for yourself or someone who can appreciate good quality. You can collect your bottles at the famous Premiato Oleificio Vanini Osvaldo.
6. Lido di Lenno
If you’re up for some relaxing you can head to Lido di Lenno, a man-made beach fully equipped with umbrellas, music, wifi-connection and a non-stop service of drinks. It includes an exclusive and lounge-styled restaurant. However, as for drinks this place can be quite expensive. It’s not your typical budget place, but it does give kids a chance to play in the sand and it’s nice to visit for one day.
7. Go dancing
On Fridays and Saturdays the bars and restaurants turn into a nightlife galore. You can dance until 4 am after dinner. However, this is no Milan or Rome. So ‘nightlife’ should not be compared with those cities, it is more cosy, less crowded and romantic.
All in all, there is enough to do in Lenno. Whether you’re on a short visit or visiting the whole day. Have fun!
